Wood project: Wooden chest

It can now serve as a storage box for toys, and later be used for other purposes. Sustainable, because a wooden chest can safely survive generations.

As wood I used again my raw oak planks with 5cm thickness. With my circular saw the planks were then separated in the middle and planed to 18mm oak boards. The boards were put together with the teachings by Wolfcraft and glued to the carcass. The lid was also connected to the body with a dowel connection. The floor was milled and nailed with 8mm alder boards (made from my raw 30mm alder boards).

After the chest was completely glued, I cut away the lid with the circular saw. The hinges were sunk and screwed and also the closure was mounted. The chest was then treated twice with a mixture of linseed oil, balsam turpentine and beeswax. Finally, the corner fittings came up so that the edges are protected.

All in all, the chest was an immense amount of time that I definitely underestimated. I think it was safe for the 20 hours I had to spend (from the raw boards to the finished chest). However, if one calculates that such a chest can survive generations, then the total workload becomes relative again. Here are a few photos of the finished chest (dimensions 60x37x29cm (WxDxH))

Wood Project: Pear Wood

The source material is Swabian pear and very long deposited. I still had leftovers available. Due to the length I have planed the good piece by hand.

1. In the center receives the prepared blank two holes, much more comfortable for later operation. The chip volume was considerable with this hard wood.

2. I have milled the air and light slots with the router and a template. The clamping is not that easy, but it does not depend on high accuracy.

3. At the bottom, I have a small fold as in the original, a small mistake has the fold grow something.

4. I have sanded the small part to grit 240, by this form quite expensive.

5. I sealed the surface with hard oil. For a slightly livelier picture, I applied a layer of linseed oil varnish

Wood Project: Wooden Child Bike

At first I searched the internet for pictures and found different models. Afterwards, I sketched the correct proportions with Google Sketch up. However, I did not do any detailed planning.

With the rough plan in mind and the approximate dimensions, we went to the workshop. Oak remains were quickly found (after not much wood for a wheel rises). Since the wheels should not be made of wood, I bought them at the local hardware store.

First, as always, the oak pieces were planed to thickness and then cut to size. Since the entire impeller should look ergonomic, I decided to round off all the corners. The trickiest part was certainly the axis of rotation between frame and fork. With a ramp molds and a long screw, however, a very practical solution was quickly found (see picture above). The steering was realized with a round stick made of beech. The wheels were simply fixed with two 8 mm wooden round rods.

Another challenge was the saddle, which I also wanted to make out of wood. Therefore, I glued several 3 mm birch plywood boards and then cut out the rough shape of the saddle with the band saw. The fine work was then done with rasp and grinding cylinder.

As a finish, I chose Tung oil with a bit of turpentine oil and orange oil. Total working time can certainly be estimated at over 10 hours. However, the result can be seen. Now remains to be seen what the little one says Smiley
